What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is truly a unique stone and so is the story of Henri Moissan who discovered the crystal in 1893 while examining rock samples from a meteor crater in Canyon Diablo Arizona. He initially mistaken the crystal as a diamond, he later identified the crystals as silicon carbide, the mineral form of silicon carbide was named moissanite in honour of Moissan later in his life.

Moissanite as we know it today is laboratory-created as moissanite in its natural form, is extremely rare. Ralph Jacobs successfully synthesized their own collection of Moissanite that mimics the characteristics of a Natural Moissanite, known as Evermore Radiant Evermore Brilliance and Evermore Classic. Evermore Radiant which is the highest quality of moissanite (E-F colour) can be compared to a E colour GIA-certified diamond.

While diamonds are graded on the 4 C’s scale (Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat), moissanites are graded solely on color. The cut and clarity is similar across different qualities of moissanites.

Ralph Jacobs created Moissanite is The Brightest Alternative to a Diamond, On the Mohs Scale (Hardness) moissanite is 9.25 compared to a diamond which is 10. The difference of only .75 is not enough to discount the high durability of the moissanite. However, Moissanite Refraction Index (RI) and Fire Dispersion out ways that of a diamond, making the moissanite more brilliant (shine) compared to a diamond.
